The Town of Eaton is taking steps to make Highway 85 safer for residents and visitors. Speed limits will soon be reduced in several areas along the corridor, following a traffic engineering speed study conducted by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) at the Town's request.
The study examined about three miles of Highway 85 through Eaton. It reviewed factors such as speed, crash history, traffic levels, pedestrian activity, road conditions, and nearby development. Based on their findings, CDOT approved several speed limit reductions along the route.
The biggest changes are on the south end of town. Some parts of Highway 85 that are now 65 mph will drop to 50 mph, and areas posted at 50 mph will go down to 35 mph. Within most of Eaton’s town limits, the speed limit will be 35 mph.
CDOT expects to install new speed limit signs in the next three to four weeks. The Town will let everyone know the schedule and when the changes take effect as soon as those details are set.
The Town of Eaton Police Department will not immediately begin issuing citations, but will focus on educating and informing the community. The Town is also preparing more educational materials to help residents understand where speed limits will change and when the new limits will take effect.
